Congratulations you’ve got through to the first round interview! Traditionally, we all think job interview is all about your skills and whether you’re a right fit. Today, the table has turned. Now, this is the chance for you to interview them and see whether your values align and if the company is the right match for you.

The first initial interview is quite exciting whether it’ll be with a HR phone screen interview or with a senior member from the team. Whoever it may be, make sure that you are well-equipped with questions to ask at the end! Here are some questions that you can pick from the list below. Obviously, don’t bombard them with questions, but converse in a way that you can transition from questions to questions without being a detective.

Ask about the design process

  • Can you explain the design process you implement for your project?
  • How often do you conduct user testing and what’s your approach?
  • In a case of a tight-timeframe, do you eliminate any of the design processes?

Ask about the projects

  • What’s the percentage of the industry from the projects you do?
  • How often does the project go live?
  • Would you say you do more B2B or B2C products
  • What’s the breakdown percentage of the UX, UI etc. that I would be doing?
  • Usually, how many designers in a project?
  • Are the projects usually short-term or long-term?
  • What’s the pipeline of the projects like?
  • What will I be working on if I join your company?

Ask about the team

  • How many designers are there in a team?
  • Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with?
  • Who will I report to directly?
  • What’s the skillset for each designers within the team? (80% UX, 20% UI?)
  • In a remote working environment, how do you keep the team together?
  • If everyone’s on different projects, how does the team support each other?
  • What’s the ratio of senior to junior members in the team?

Ask about the learning & development

  • Is there a learning budget?
  • Does your team support designers going to a paid conference? (like UX Australia)
  • How involve is your team/company in the design community?
  • Does your team/company support designers getting a course certificate?- -
  • What training programs are available?
  • What does career progression look like in this company?

General question

  • Why has this position become available?
  • How long has this role been advertised for?
  • What’s the next process after today’s interview?

That’s it! That’s all I can think on top of my head right now. If you have any other questions, feel free to comment below. Alternatively, there’s also multiple resources out there for more questions as well.
